Amy Marie Schmitke
July 7, 1937 –October 6, 1984
Amy was born July 7, 1937. As one of the younger children, and a girl, she (along with the other girls) took on extra responsibility early when their mother died in 1946. Millie shared that one time they were in the kitchen working during a storm. One of them looked out the window and saw a tornado. Amy was fascinated watching it, but the older girls grabbed her and headed to the storm cellar. Thankfully, it turned aside before reaching the farmhouse.
Amy married Elmer Gutterud on March 2, 1956. They would go on to have three children, Terry, Wane, and Kelly. They lived on a farm near Thief River Falls, MN. During the last years of his life, Carl Sr. lived in a trailer house on their farm. Many family gatherings were held at the farm in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Amy died from cancer in 1984. Amy and Elmer are buried in Silver Creek Cemetery in rural Thief River Falls.
